GINGIVITIS

 


DEFINITION: Gingivitis is a dental term for gum inflammation which commonly occurs because of film of bacteria which accumulate on the teeth in the form of plaque.
Gingivitis is non-destructive type of periodontal disease. If it leave untreated it can lead to periodontitis that are more serious and can also lead to tooth loss.

  




TYPES OF GINGIVITIS
There may be two types of gingivitis depending on severity:

1.CHRONIC GINGIVITIS: It is a persistent inflammation of the gingiva the soft tissue surrounding the teeth.This condition can progress to the tooth loss and to various serious problems.
It occurs when people do not adequately care for their mouths and inflammation increases rapidly and can resolve by treatment.
First signs and symptoms of gingivitis is bleeding gums, swelling and as the
disease increase the condition become severe and gums become tender , pain, redness of gingiva increases.
Early treatment can cure this. Treatment for chronic gingivitis is to remove plaque and regular cleaning of mouth.




2.ANUG (Acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis): 
It is a common, non-contagious infection of the gum. It is also called as vincent's stomatitis, or trench mouth.
ANUG may develop in people in the people having gingivitis history, in smokers and people who face more stressful events, have immune system problem, severe malnutrition.
Paitent sufferring from ANUG may have infected painful gums, bleeding,
mouth sore, bad breadth ( halitosis),
fever, weakness, swelling in lymphnodes of neck, jaw, redness and swollen gums.

    TREATMENTS
  • Regular cleaning of mouth and teeths.
  • Antibacterial mouthwash containing chlorhexidine.
  • Regular removal of plaque and tartar
    professionally by dentist in every 6 months.
  • Maintain oral hygiene.




In gingivitis antibiotics can help in 
controlling this , root planing and scalling
and in severe condition surgical
treatments should be given by dentist.
